Jon Stewart jumped in the wayback machine on April 20, with a 420 celebration that would make any child of the 60’s proud.
Stewart whips out the love beads and the multi-colored wig for his presentation of “Uncle Jonny’s Super Kush Totally Chillaxed Sticky-Icky Informative Marijuana News Report.” The “report” starts with a promo for a CNN special on marijuana. That promo made it look like the network was going to present a program on weed that would be a stoner’s delight. Instead, what viewers got was a report on tax revenue from marijuana sales, and the benefits of medical marijuana.
Stewart chokes on his Ben & Jerry’s when he discovers that the promo was designed to lure people in. “Well you f*cked me, CNN,” he says. “I’m ready for Weedstock, the whole thing, and you’re giving me this. This is an actual news report. What, are you going to bore me with an economics lesson now?” Which is exactly what he gets — a report on the economics of legal weed.
Next, Daily Show correspondent Jessica Williams stops by to further harsh Stewart’s buzz, telling him that he needs to drop the 60’s lingo when talking about marijuana. She tells him that
Pot isn’t just for shirtless old dudes with bongos. It’s a non-addictive, proven effective medical treatment that is now raising much needed tax revenue.
After Williams finishes her rant, Stewart ends the segment by going after “total narc,” New Jersey governor Chris Christie. Christie has called marijuana a “gateway drug,” and has said that if he were elected president, he would enforce federal marijuana law, and crack down on states that permit its medical use. Stewart calls Christie on his hypocrisy for supporting legalized online gambling, but opposing marijuana. Stewart observes that online gambling is addictive, and frowned upon by federal law. But there is a difference, between pot and gambling, he says. “If you smoke too much pot, no one comes to break your f*cking knees.”
