This Week Tonight Host John Oliver made a special video wishing Americans a happy Independence Day, “or as they call it where I’m from, July the 4th,” the comedian joked.
While many Americans are celebrating their country’s independence from Great Britain, Oliver thought it might also be fun to share some of the things Americans are missing due to their woeful lack of British culture.
It might be worth thinking about just the handful of things you gave up when kicking Britain unceremoniously out of this country,” Oliver said.
The first thing was rather obvious, something many Americans envy about our English speaking trans-Atlantic friends with bad teeth.
First, the accents: these beautiful vowel sounds could have been yours,” said the British host. “But instead, from sea to shining sea, you speak like you just burnt your tongue on a hot apple pie.
This is true. And when you consider how easily British and Australian actors can mimic our accents, it becomes clear how much of a raw deal America got over 200 hundred years ago.
The comedian also pointed out other cool British stuff Americans can’t appreciate, like Bowler hats and Mincemeat pies, “which are a lot like British people themselves: a hardened outer layer gives the impression of composure but under the surface, it’s just a hot fucking mess.”
But the thing that Americans are really missing the boat on is pessimism, according to Oliver. “We are painfully aware of our limits,” he said.[ad3media campaign=”95″ youtube=”IQwMCQFgQgo”]
The British also have some of the most creative vulgarity and insults in the world, despite their uber-sophisticated reputation.
