WOW: This Is The Pathetic Way Right-Wing Sites Are Attacking Liberals About Orlando

A madman with a semi-automatic weapon walked into an LGBT nightclub in Florida over the weekend and opened fire, killing 49 people. Orlando Police Chief John Mina told reporters on Sunday that the gunman, Omar Mateen, used an “AR-15 type assault weapon.” He probably said that because, sadly, over the past few years all of America has become familiar with the civilian variant of the military M-16, and it was a name that most people would recognize. Some news outlets ran with the story that Mateen had committed his murders with an AR-15, when in fact the weapon he used was a Sig Sauer MCX Carbine.

Right-wing sites immediately seized on this minor detail in their latest attempt to attack anyone who is calling for such weapons to be banned. Hot Air’s headline says, “About that Orlando AR-15…It wasn’t.” The Blaze presented it this way: “Despite What You’ve Heard, the Orlando Terrorist Did Not Use an AR-15 in Attack.” On Bearing Arms the headline was, “NARRATIVE FAIL: Orlando Islamic Terrorist Did NOT Use An AR-15.”

This is how absolutely pathetic the pro-gun community has become, that they want to quibble over the deaths of 49 people because the shooter used a weapon that is only different from an AR-15 in some minor technical ways. It’s almost as if Mateen had walked into the Pulse nightclub with a BB gun and liberals were saying he had brought in a howitzer.

Here’s an AR-15:

Not a hell of a lot of difference in appearance, right? The AR-15 fires a 5.56 mm NATO round. The MCX? It can fire several types of ammunition, the 5.56 mm being one of them. The AR-15 barrel is 20 inches, the MCX is 16. Both hold a 30-round magazine. And in terms of the receiver, which is where the magazine attaches to the gun, Sig Sauer describes the MCX as having one that is of an “AR-15 type.” Other specifics, such as muzzle velocity, vary based on the type of ammunition used, but you get the point. And as for the use of these weapons? The fully automatic variants are weapons of war. The civilian versions are different largely in that they are not fully automatic. The Truth About Guns even opens their review of the MCX by saying “SIG SAUER developed the MCX rifle for America’s special forces.”

Bob Owens, at Bearing Arms, is a special kind of idiot. He says,

All the media cares about is that they’ve wrapped their anti-gun dreams on demonizing the most popular rifle sold in the United States, and they’re going to keep attacking it, whether or not it was used in any particular incident or not.

This is all they have. Seriously. They are attacking gun control advocates in the media because many outlets elected to examine the AR-15, and not a much newer weapon that differs only in a few technical specifics. This shows how pathetic and indefensible the right’s position on these guns has become.

(Data on the AR-15 was taken from Gary Conway’s AR-15 websiteSpecifications for the MCX Carbine comes from Sigevolution, a Sig Sauer company site.)
