None of Trump’s cabinet picks have had a smooth time in front of their congressional confirmation hearing, but Betsy Devos, Trump’s would be Education Secretary, is imploding in real time.
During her confirmation hearing in which she repeatedly confused laws, appeared unaware of basic education policy, and otherwise looked rattled, Devos also managed to suggest that one reason schools should allow guns on the property is do defend against potential grizzly bear attacks.
Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy (D) has had first hand experience with the dangers of guns in schools. As the congressman representing Newtown, he experienced the tragedy at Sandy Hook elementary on a very personal level and has been a fierce advocate for gun sense. During his questioning of DeVos whether or not she believed “guns have any place in or around schools?” Her answer was half-libertarian, half-insane.
DeVos first said she would leave it up to the states, and when pressed for a more comprehensive answer about her own beliefs, she had this pearl of wisdom:
“I will refer back to Senator Enzi and the school he was talking about in Wyoming … I would imagine that there is probably a gun in the schools to protect from potential grizzlies.”
For those curious, the number of children who have died from bear attacks while at school is zero. The number of school shootings in American since 2013 is over 200.
DeVos went on to say that she would support Trump’s plans for guns. While Trump has never been clear about this (or any) policy, he has frequently expressed the desire to get rid of “gun free zones” and allow people to carry guns in more public places, including schools. He vowed to remove the laws protecting gun free zones on his very first day in office.
“I will get rid of gun-free zones on schools, and — you have to — and on military bases. My first day, it gets signed, okay? My first day. There’s no more gun-free zones.”

In short, Trump’s pick for Education Secretary is either oblivious to the point of actual harmfulness or cruel beyond comprehension. But at least she’s also a fundamentalist Christian private schooler who doesn’t believe in public schools and only got her job because she is a billionaire who gave generously to Trump’s campaign!
